Week 1 - Introduction of Sustainable Development (8 Oct 2024)

Assalamualaikum wbt,Im Fakrullah Bin Zakaria from the Arabic Department would like to share my study journey of SCSH 1201.

Have a good day on the first class of SCSH 1201.

Introduction of class

After two hours of exchanging perspectives, the most interesting aspect of this morning's class session was that it began with an introduction between the students and the instructor. During this morning's introduction, we were requested to give interesting personal information such as our names, places of residence, school addresses, one word concerning the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), and one word to represent ourselves.

The lecturer also discussed the key figures in the IIUM's founding and administrative structure. He also spoke on the history of IIUM's founding.

Main Discussion

As usual, we were introduced to the term SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). For your information, I first heard this term while studying at the Center Foundation of Studies (CFS) in Gambang. We were then exposed to the concept through group learning, often known as an Insan Sejahtera session.

The lecturer at the time presented problems related to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) such as flash floods on the Gombak IIUM campus, illegal logging, the disposal of foreign fish in the local river, an increased cat population, and the presence of stray dogs on the IIUM Gombak campus.

Personal Reflection

Since attending this class, my understanding of the necessity of sustainability in all facets of life has grown. The topics mentioned by the professor are critical because they affect the future of the next generation. This is also consistent with Islamic teachings, which extend the notion of wasatiyyah into a Muslim's daily life.

Application of learning

The main way  is to observe the current environment to see if it meets the characteristics of natural sustainability.Understanding the concepts and principles is also very important because it helps the smooth application of natural sustainability. In addition, exploring the outside world or new problems so that we can feel it as well as analyzing solutions through detailed studies.

Additional Self-Improvement

I need to expand my knowledge related to issues of environmental sustainability. In addition, I also need to spread the importance to the community.

Conclusion

The lecturer's delivery method is very mature and suitable for the age level of the students. The content of the subject is also very interesting because the discussion goes beyond the limits of critical thinking.
