Week 3-Maqasid Shariah And Sustainable Development (22 Oct 2024)

Assalamualaikum wbt,I'm Fakrullah Bin Zakaria from the Arabic Department would like to share my study journey of SCSH 1201.

Main Discussion

This class's discussion focused on the relationship between the syariah maqasid and the Sustainable Development Goals. This time, the maqasid is related to the SDG's 5Ps.In general, the primary goal of this maqasid sharia is to safeguard the common welfare and prevent widespread harm.

Personal Reflection
The best fact that imoressed me for this time is sustainable development has been a part of Islamic life since the seventh century. The concept of sustainable development is not new in Islam; it has been a major component of Islamic teachings since the time of Prophet Muhammad SAW. Many verses of the Qur'an provide counsel on environmental care and ecological balance, but most of the Muslim world has not taken advantage of this guidance until recently.

In addition, Maqasid Syariah and SDG complement each other even though they are not based on religion.Although the SDGs are set by the UN without any specific religious influence, many of the goals of the SDGs are in line with Maqasid Shariah, especially in the aspect of protecting life, property, reason, lineage, and religion. For example, the protection of the environment and social justice emphasized in the SDGs are also contained in the principles of Maqasid Syariah.

Application of Learning
As a student, one of the things I can do is connect the Maqasid Syariah principle with the practice of sustainability in my daily life. For example, I can undertake a "Sustainable Stewardship" project that integrates Maqasid Shariah principles with sustainability techniques. This project tries to put responsibilities as a caliph or environmental protector into practice through simple yet impactful actions. You might begin by informing people about the importance of sustainability in Islam via social media or small talk. In addition, use items wisely, avoid waste, and select ecologically friendly products. I'm also involved in community hygiene projects to help the environment.

Additional Self-Learning

I am need to capable of conducting extensive research on the five Maqasid Syariah.
Concentrate on each of the five primary goals: faith, life, reason, offspring, and riches. Consider how each relates to characteristics of sustainable development such as social welfare, environmental preservation, and ethical governance. In addition, I must read Islamic scriptures or scholarly publications on each purpose and write notes on how these principles might form sustainable actions for individuals and communities.

Additional Info
In this class, the lecturer gave us the task to visit the IIUM Gallery and we were asked to find and observe information or exhibits related to the 5 Maqasid Islamic Sharia. As a result, we found some new information after the activity.

Our photographs while visiting the IIUM gallery.

Conclusion

The combination of Maqasid Syariah with sustainable development demonstrates Islam's dedication to holistic well-being, which guides humanity in protecting life, intellect, faith, lineage, and wealth. Individuals can fulfill their responsibility as stewards of the Earth by integrating spiritual ideals with sustainable behaviors, guaranteeing economic, social, and environmental balance for present and future generations. Embracing these values promotes a peaceful, ethical approach to growth that benefits all people.
